Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system which includes the brain and spinal cord. The disease attacks myelin, the protective covering of the nerves, causing deterioration of the myelin.
MS is unpredictable and can cause physical and emotional symptoms such as extreme fatigue, lack of coordination, weakness, tingling, impaired sensation, vision problems, bladder problems, cognitive impairment and mood changes.
The cause of this disease that touches one person in 385 in Canada is still unknown.
Why is this important for us?
Mélanie, founder of Twiggzy explains:
"I have been affected by this disease since the age of 18 and I am now 44. To date, the disease has not left me with too many after effects, except extreme fatigue - at times - and numbness in my entire body (98% of my body except my eyes!). This numbness is painful and very unpleasant, but I cannot complain because I can still enjoy life to its fullest! Besides, I always say that the announcement of this diagnosis was a gift for me because strangely, I see life differently... I enjoy every day to its maximum, as I am more aware than ever that no one knows what the future holds. We must enjoy every moment.
Today, I wish that the creation of Twiggzy and the benefits that we will derive from it can be used for research against this disease, which affects approximately 12,000 Quebecers."
Mélanie's involvement in the fight against multiple sclerosis dates from the past. She has been involved with the Montérégie Division for a few years, without including her involvement as ambassadress during a race for MS.
